- Sara Simeoni, Olympic champion and world record holder in high jump;

- Alberto Cova who wins the 10,000 meters during the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki;
- The men's 4 x 100 meters relay race of the Championships 1983 World Athletics Championships was held in Helsinki. It was won by Team USA (Emmit King, Willie Gault, Calvin Smith and Carl Lewis ) who established a new world record in '37;
